Underwater Love: Why I’m In The Fight for the Great Australian Bight by Michaela Skovranova - 15 May 2018                                                                   Michaela Skovranova © Andy Hatton I first moved to Australia from a landlocked country when I was 13. All of a sudden, I was surrounded by what felt like endless oceans. The ocean was intimidating, powerful and incredibly beautiful. It completely enchanted me. Now, I’m a photographer specialising in the oceans, and the Great Australian Bight is our wild, uncompromising, underwater backyard. It’s a place where dragons live and thousands of cuttlefish aggregate to breed. It’s home to the puppies of the sea – the endangered sea lions – and a highway for the largest animal in the world. Many of these creatures that call the Bight home...

Point Nemo is the most remote oceanic spot – yet it’s still awash with plastic

Point Nemo is the most remote oceanic spot – yet it’s still awash with plastic Fri 18 May 2018  16.04 BST The area is so far flung that the nearest humans are often those aboard the International Space Station. But even that hasn’t saved it from the scourge of microplastics. Name:  Point Nemo. Age:  First discovered in 1992 by survey engineer Hrvoje Lukatela. Appearance:  A load of water, surrounded by even more water. How do I get there?  I wouldn’t bother: the trip would involve a tremendous amount of effort for very little in the way of return. So what’s the point of Point Nemo?  It’s officially the oceanic pole of inaccessibility. What does that even mean?  It’s the spot in the ocean farthest away from land in any direction – in effect, the middle of nowhere. And where is that, exactly?  Point Nemo is located at 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W, more than 1,600km away from three equidistant islands, including Easter Islan...

Five Asian Countries Dump More Plastic Into Oceans Than Anyone Else Combined: How You Can Help Hannah Leung  ,  FORBES STAFF Indonesia’s Citarum River, blackened by debris beyond recognition, has been dubbed the most polluted  river in the world . The situation has gotten so bad that the army was recently called in to remove the plastic waste -- and prevent further dumping in the waterway, according to  media reports . An Indonesian worker removes plastic and other garbage clogging the Citarum river on March 25, 2016 in West Java, Indonesia. JEFTA IMAGES / BARCROFT MEDIA It’s just one sliver of the massive pollution problem in Asia.  China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam are dumping more plastic into oceans than the rest of the world combined  , according to a 2017 report  by  Ocean Conservancy .  This isn’t just an Asia problem. Plastic is one of the greatest environmental challenges facing the world. The U.S. wast...

Scourge Of The Seas: How China Is Tackling The Ocean's Plastic Problem

Scourge Of The Seas: How China Is Tackling The Ocean's Plastic Problem Jill Baker Contributor Plastic waste is seen on the north coast of Jakarta, Indonesia on Thursday, March 15, 2018. (Aditya Irawan/NurPhoto via Getty Images) As  Earth Day  rolls around again, whether we have seen Blue Planet II, or photos of whales and other sea life that have starved on a diet of ingested plastics, we are increasingly aware that ocean plastics are a menacing -- and worsening -- problem. China’s role in the issue is critical, particularly since an estimated five million tons of the  eight million  tons of plastic entering the sea each year comes via China. But there are hopeful signs that stricter environmental regulation by Beijing will have a positive impact on ocean plastics. I should say upfront that my interest in the subject was piqued by Marcy Trent-Long's terrific podcast,  The Eight Million . I was lucky enough to reach plastics expert and Founder of...
