Plastic Wasteland: Asia's Ocean Pollution Crisis PUBLISHED JUN 5, 2018, 12:43 PM SGT This photo taken on May 12, 2018 shows Perigrina Santos, 81, collecting her laundry next to a garbage-filled creek in Manila. The blanket of trash on a creek that flows between the makeshift homes of a Manila slum is so dense it appears one could walk across it like a paved street. PHOTO: AFP THANH HOA, VIETNAM (AFP) - A Vietnamese mangrove draped with polythene, a whale killed after swallowing waste bags in Thai seas and clouds of underwater trash near Indonesian "paradise" islands - grim images of the plastic crisis that has gripped Asia. About eight million tonnes of plastic waste are dumped into the world's oceans every year, the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic being tipped into the sea every minute of every day. More than half comes from five Asian countries: China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, according to a 2015 Ocean Conservancy report...

Developed Countries' take on the Plastic Pollution

G7 Minus Two: Leaders Agree to Ocean Plastic Charter Author  Irene Banos Ruiz                     Date  11.06.2018 Five of the G7 nations, without the US and Japan, have agreed to an ocean plastics charter. But will such non-binding measures be enough for the world's industrialized countries to beat plastic pollution together? Hate crimes, discrimination, inequality and nightmare events like the deadly war in Syria can make us feel that our world is upside down. But these weren't the only urgent issues world leaders had to address. Climate change and  plastic pollution  are much quieter threats — but relentless and fierce nonetheless. In the Group of Seven's (G7) closing communique out of Charlevoix, Canada, on Saturday, the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom pledged to combat ocean pollution through a  G7 Ocean Plastics Charter . The United States and Japan ...

Beat Plastic Pollution

Beat Plastic Pollution - WWF Stop suffocating our oceans and nature, which does so much for us. Join us and show your support to beat plastic pollution. Together, it's possible. Here's why we need to use less plastic Did you know that globally, we dump around eight million tonnes of plastic into the sea every year? That's the same as a garbage truck dumping a full load into the ocean every minute. And this is impacting our home. Some of the problems include sea turtles mistaking plastic bags for jellyfish, seabirds found with their stomachs full of plastic items, plastic debris affecting the health of reefs, and so much more. Some of the major concerns of plastic pollution Plastic bags only serve their purpose for an average of 30 minutes before they are thrown away. This leads to huge amounts of plastic waste ending up in our oceans every year. What can you do to help reduce the amount of trash in our environment? How long did you take to finish your ...

Is Your Recycling Gets Recycled?

Is Your Recycling is Getting Recycled? By    Livia Albeck-Ripka May 29, 2018 Plastics and papers from dozens of American cities and towns are being dumped in landfills after China stopped recycling most “foreign garbage.”                         Bales of recyclable waste in Seattle. American waste managers are struggling to find plants to process their recyclables. Credit                        Wiqan Ang for The New York Times Oregon is serious about recycling. Its residents are accustomed to dutifully separating milk cartons, yogurt containers, cereal boxes and kombucha bottles from their trash to divert them from the landfill. But this year, because of a far-reaching rule change in China, some of the recyclables are ending up in the local dump anyway. In recent months, in fact, thousands of tons of material left curbside for recycling in doz...

Corona, PHD And World Oceans Day Awareness Program

Corona & PHD Tackle Ocean Pollution By   B&T MAGAZINE In the lead up to World Oceans Day on Friday 8 June, Corona will take to the world stage in a continued effort to raise awareness around the eight million metric tons of marine plastic pollution that’s dumped into our oceans each year. In partnership with 100 islands protected ambassador Chris Hemsworth, Corona is hijacking iconic symbols of paradise, including their OOH billboards in Melbourne, London, Santiago, Bogota, Santo Domingo and Lima. At Federation Square, Melbourne, Corona’s ‘From Where You’d Rather Be’ OOH billboard featuring Chris Hemsworth surfing a beautiful ocean wave, will be juxtaposed by a 1,580kg ‘wave of waste’, to alert Aussies of the amount of plastic going into Australia’s ocean every hour. Over the course of Ocean’s Week, the brand will take plastic waste collected from in and around Melbourne and build them on top of the billboard, essentially polluting their own advertising with pl...

Whale Died After Eating 80 Plastic Bags

Whale Died After Eating 80 Plastic Bags 2 June 2018                        AFP/ THAIWHALES     Helpers tried to stabilise the whale but it died on Friday afternoon A pilot whale has died off southern Thailand after swallowing 80 plastic bags, Thai marine officials say. The whale vomited five bags during a vain attempt by conservation officials to save it in a canal in Songkhla province. The bags, weighing about 8kg (17lbs), had made it impossible for the whale to eat food, a marine expert said. A recent report warned the amount of plastic in the ocean could triple in a decade  unless litter was curbed. Thailand is a major user of plastic bags and its government last month announced it was considering a levy on them. They are believed to kill hundreds of marine animals there each year. The small male pilot whale had been discovered ailing and unable to swim in the Na Thap Canal last Monday.   ...
